On-base percentage rewards walks and hit-by-pitches in addition to hits, giving a fuller picture of a hitter's ability to avoid making outs.
How OBP is calculated
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF)
What counts as a good OBP
Higher is better — roughly .290 is poor, .320 average, .350 good, and .380 or better elite.
