BABIP
Batting average on balls in play — hits per ball put in play (no HRs, no Ks).
What BABIP means
How often balls in play become hits. Hovers near .300 league-wide; sustained outliers indicate quality of contact, defensive luck, or speed. Big swings often regress.
How BABIP is calculated
BABIP = (H − HR) / (AB − K − HR + SF)
What counts as a good BABIP
Higher is better — roughly .270 is poor, .300 average, .330 good, and .360 or better elite.
