Fielding percentage — share of chances handled without an error.
What FLD% means
The oldest defensive stat and the least informative: a fielder who never reaches a difficult ball never gets charged with an error. Range metrics like OAA are the modern answer.
How FLD% is calculated
FLD% = (PO + A) / (PO + A + E)
What counts as a good FLD%
Higher is better — roughly .965 is poor, .980 average, .988 good, and .995 or better elite.
