Gap between actual ERA and fielding-independent ERA — a regression flag.
What ERA − FIP means
Positive means the pitcher has allowed more runs than his strikeouts, walks and homers suggest — usually bad defense or bad sequencing luck, and usually temporary. Negative means he has been getting away with something.
