Barrels/PA

Barrels as a share of plate appearances rather than batted balls.

What Barrels/PA means

The companion to Barrel%. Dividing by batted balls asks "when he hits it, how well?"; dividing by plate appearances asks "how often does damage actually happen?" — so it charges a hitter for strikeouts instead of ignoring them. A high-strikeout slugger can post an elite Barrel% and a merely good Barrels/PA. League median ~5%; 8.5%+ is top-decile.

How Barrels/PA is calculated

barrels / plate appearances

What counts as a good Barrels/PA

Higher is better — roughly .020 is poor, .050 average, .066 good, and .085 or better elite.
